With this piece I want to play with the idea of being someone else, being in someone else’s “heart”, in an exercise of detaching from ourselves/transposing ourselves into another body, another skin, another situation, another life. A metaphor for compassion.

My piece uses the kitsch conception of a precious heart, something valuable, a jewel, a symbol of love, from where comes the noblest attitudes to change the world, but it is fragile and needs to be preserved. So, as Snow White lying in the middle of the forest, the heart is presented in a glass dome. Protected only by a vulnerable glass barrier. Untouchable, but still visible, arousing the audience’s curiosity.

The heart is made with yarn (100% wool, lace weight) molded in the shape and size of an actual human heart. The chosen material allows it be translucid, being possible to see through its thin skin. Inside, a LED light and a buzz is turned on by a pulse sensor connected to the piece.

The audience is invited to interact with it, putting “their hearts on it” in order to keep it pulsing. Whenever someone uses the sensor, the light and buzz are activated. Albeit separated from the body the heart is still alive pumping. Although it does not belong to a single person, the audience working together makes it go on. The heart will keep beating as long someone pays attention, connects himself/herself to it. To complete the metaphor, the opposite is also true: if people do not use the sensor, the heart dies, meaning that the world changes depending on the collective effort.

The broken heart. The knots in stomach. The slashes caused by over criticism. The stab in the back. The sexual violence.

The floss and the dress were dyed by me using natural dyes.

“All love letters are ridiculous”. Fernando Pessoa

Based in the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa’s words, I decided to embroider a full sized love letter written by a man.

Why a man, one may ask. Because in our culture we came to expect women to write love letters. Nobody would say it’s ridiculous for women to talk about their feelings. But for a man… Exposing their feelings in a letter is unusual. 

In the poem, Pessoa starts judging love letters. And then little by little he admits that he once wrote some and that only people who never wrote one are ridiculous. 

Why embroider? Embroidery is usually linked to femininity and romanticism, a love letter is also usually connected with both. This piece reframes an unusual male expression of love in a feminine format, raising questions of stereotypes and prejudices create by our culture.
